The smile is infectious and the energy levels of the owner of Portia’s Place never ending, but the real reason this restaurant’s long list of loyal customers visit time and again is the award winning Chinese food (and, for some, the opportunity to hob nob with Canberra’s politicians when Parliament is sitting).
Portia Lowery’s menu of traditional dishes from every region in China showcases about 50 mains. The blend of flavours is unique and the quality top notch. It’s no wonder Portia has won Best Chinese Restaurant (Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence), more than once.
This is not a restaurant with a quiet ambience. Rather, it is filled with the sounds of sizzling hot pots, busy staff placing order after order, and the constant chatter of a packed-out crowd of diners enjoying every bite.
Almost the second you’re seated, a dish of honey nuts appears to get you started while you study the menu and its intriguing descriptions of Chinese customs.
Don’t miss out on one of Portia’s signature dishes—crispy fried duck rolled in paper-thin Chinese pancakes and Hoisin sauce.
The restaurant is famous for its steamed dumplings—home-style gow-tse filled with pork and freshly chopped chives served in a bamboo basket. They are addictive.
For mains it’s hard to go by the Shantung chicken in its piquant soya and vinegar sauce, with chilli. And the King Island fillet steak with pepper sauce and button mushrooms is irresistible.
Portia has a specials list which changes regularly. And to top each meal off, customers receive hot towels with lemon essence and little chocolates. BYO and licensed. Bookings highly recommended.
